Love, acceptance and security are fundamental human needs. It is especially important that these needs are met during childhood. Fortunately, most children in Russia experience childhood on this basis. However, more than probably a million Russian children are left to themselves. Their parents are beyond reach. They have no home. They live in the streets or at railway stations. And often they take to theft, drug abuse and prostitution in order to survive.
Of course they need food, clothing, and shelter. But most of all they need love, acceptance and security. Experience in Poland shows that prolonged residence in special rehabilitation centers based on exactly these values can change the lives of these children.
Grow Up Like Others is working to establish Russian centers based on the Polish model.
