Poverty

There are different ways of defining poverty. The poverty line is defined by a subsistence minimum in Russia, and since its introduction in 1992 it has been changed twice. In the figure below, the columns show the official estimates of the number of poor people which in 2004 was about 17.8% or 25.6 million. The curve shows the percentage of the total money income of the population that would have to be redistributed to the poor in order to bring them above the poverty line.
